Who’s Afraid of Thunderstorms in a Haunted Tower?

This is the author’s  very 1st attempt at screenplay writing.

The author was Age 10.  And so it begins. . .

Time:    1:00pm on a summer afternoon

Setting: On the path leading to the old Tamper house, which is now vacant.

Characters:       Jill Roberts & Bill Roberts – 12-year old twins

                        Linda Butler

                        Jim Butler – 12-years old

                        Narrator

                        Police

                        Thief

Jill:        It sure is too bad that we can’t move into the old Tamper house just because we haven’t found the

Tamper will.  He was our grandfather. And we have a right to move into it.

Bill:       Yeah, and we have to live in that apartment until someone finds the will.

Linda:   Is this where we turn onto the walkway of the house?

Jim:      Yes, I’ve been here before, haven’t you?

Linda:   No.

Jim:      (whispering)  Well, there’s a tower connected to the east wing and something fishy is going on up

            there.

Linda:   (eyes widening)  Really?

Narrator:          A few minutes later the four children arrived in front of the house.  It was sort of run-down,

but still held its beauty.  There was a big garden in the back which continued clear around the

house.  The house itself was painted white with pale blue shutters, which badly needed

painting.  The yard was over-grown with weeds.  The house had many balconies and on the east and west wings stood two towers and a long walkway connecting them.

Linda:   Oh!  What a house…so big and….and beautiful!

Bill:       Hurry up.  It’s getting to be 3:00 o’clock.

Narrator:          They got inside through a winder, and climbed the winding, red-carpeted stairway to

                        Grandfather’s study.

Jill:                    I think we ought to look here first, because he would have hidden the will where he worked.

Narrator:          I was just then when they heard men’s voice approaching.

Him & Bill:       We’ll go and see who and where they are.

Jill:                    Be careful!

Narrator:          A few minutes later the boys returned with question marks in their eyes.

Jim:                  We checked every room and can’t find them at all!

Narrator:          Then they heard a door open and it creaked on its rusted hinges.

Bill:                   Hurry!….to the east Tower.  They can’t find us there.

Narrator:          They all rushed up to the tower quickly but quietly.  They stayed there for a few minutes and then they heard a key go into the lock.  Then someone laughed wickedly on the other side of the door.  Linda

                        ran to the door.

Linda (worriedly):         Hey!  It’s locked!  Now we’re stranded up here!

Narrator:          They all looked around the tower.  It was round in shape with two windows.

Jill (who had been searching for a way out):       It’s about 54:00.  I wish Mom--- (and stopped.  Her foot

had hit a certain button in the floor and it said, “East corner, Washington’s eye.”

Narrator:          Linda and Jill screamed at the voice, which sounded human.  Then looked at the tower

                        once more.

Jim:                  East corner, Washington’s eye…doesn’t make sense.

Narrator:          So they sat down and thought.  No one made a noise or sound for 2 hours, and then all four

of them drifted off to sleep.  After that, Linda woke up wondering where she was.  She woke

                        the others.

Bill:                   Hey!  Look at that thunderstorm!  What a whopper!

Linda:               Our mothers must be worried sick about us now.

Jim:                  Yes, but I’m about to starve.

Narrator:          All of a sudden there was a scream from Jill.  She was leaning on the north wall of the tower and it slowly revolved and the wall Jill had leaned on was on the other side.  The wall facing the other

three revealed a skeleton.  There was a crash of Thunder and the lightning revealed the terrible looking skull of the skeleton and everyone jumped.

Bill:                   Great Scott!  Jill really goofed on leaning on that wall.  Maybe if we did the same as…

Narrator:          The skeleton raised a bony finger and pointed it at Bill.  “You make a move or that girl will

never be seen again!  Do as I say!”

Jim (whispering):           I-I-I-t talked!  I-s-s-s it alive?

Linda:               For Heaven’s sake!  Get me out of here!  I’m scared!

Jim:                  Shut-up and listen to me.  We’ve got to get to Jill.  Come on, we have to take the risk.

Jill (when the other found her)  Look!  There are four statues in the four corners of the room.

Bill:                   Maybe  - - -

Linda:               If I’m seeing what you’re seeing, one of those statues is washington…..

Narrator:          Then on of the statues, Roosevelt spoke, “What are you doing in this room?”

Jim:                  Well, I-, you see---

Narrator:          Then Hoover spoke up “No one has been in this room for twenty-five years until you came in.

Then Madison said, “Washington has something to tell you.”

Bill (going over to the statue of Washington):     Hey, you guys.  The statue of Washington is standing in the east corner.  Don’t  you understand?

Jim:                  What that voice said?

Jill:                    Come on, Bill.  Reach into his right eye.

Linda (excitedly):          Come on, the will might just be in there!   (seconds pass)

Bill:                   It’s empty!  Nothing’s in this tiny little space.

Jim:                  Are you sure?

Bill:                   Yep.

Linda:               And we were so close in solving the mystery.

Jill:                    Let’s check this door and see if it’s locked.  (tries door)  Good, it isn’t.  Come on and let’s

get out of this ….this haunted house.

Jim:                  Let’s walk over and see the West Tower.  Maybe he moved the will over there.

Linda:               What! And have us get locked in that Tower?  Never!  You can go without me.

Jill:                    Same here!

Bill:                   I don’t think we had better do that, but let’s go down the outside stairway leading to the

                        garden.

Narrator:          They reached the garden and they were just about out of the garden when a white, wet piece

of paper brushed against Linda’s face. She picked it up and read a few lines.

Linda (excitedly):          Hey, this is is!!  It’s the will!!!!!

Bill:                   Oh Boy!  Jill, maybe our troubles are over.

Jill (reading):     …the old Tamper house to my son, John Roberts.  Bill, that’s us!!!

Thief (grabbing Jill from behind)  That’s my property!  Hand it over!

Jim:                  Listen, Mister, this is John Roberts’ property.

Thief:                But, I’m his brother or say, half-brother.  I’m Paul Roberts.  Now gimme that paper!

Police:              Okay, Buster.  Caught you red-handed!

Thief:                These kids got my property.

Police:              You can tell us that in court.  Now come on!  Kids, nope into my car.  Your parents have been notified.  I’ll take you home;  you’ve had a full day or I should say a full afternoon.

Jim (in the car): Will you explain the statues talking, the voice when Jill put her foot on a button, and the skeleton

                        to us?

Police:              Sure, well, when the thieves heard you in the house, they wanted to scare you.  So they used a

skeleton which was a marionette, and talked for it and the same for the statues.  They locked you

in so they could make a getaway.

All 4 kids:         Oh!

Narrator:          That morning, I should say, for it was 1:00am –Jill and Bill were fed and put to bed.  Just before Jill climbed into bed, she whispered across the hall to Bill

Jill:                    Bill, Dad said moving day will be a week from tomorrow!

Bill:                   Can’t wait!!!!
