If Only You Knew

If only you knew  -  the content behind these eyes - within her soul.

your Light shines in to brighten the shadows, and to seek what hides inside.

Pushing open the door, you squint and see a timid but hopeful child

who stands in the dimness, brushes herself off, hesitates - she smiled !

She says not a word, but beckons you into her world of laughter and love.

with giggles and smiles and innocent talk… she opens up your world.

She hides inside her fear and caution and many years of doubt.

This world is not a friendly place, ‘way too young to find that out.

But if only you knew how she trusts you, and seeks your words and hugs

hushed confidences, silly little stories, she longs to hear from you.

Her hero, you are… so painfully aware - thoughtful and vastly real –

In front of you now, eyes opened so wide, she crouches to a kneel.

If only you knew, the love in her heart and the yearning to be pure yet older

She wants to be “big” and win your heart, to love with open arms.

Together with you she looks in the brook, and lets out a little sigh.

‘Come with me,’ she takes his hand and runs;  and off towards Eternity they fly.
