How Do I Love A Step-Son?

If you had advice to give…. How and Why and If and When

This poem is in tribute to us both back then.

I walked into your life so many decades back

The memories are spilling, the words I don’t lack.

Your dad I did love, and will always do…

But because of him.I befriended you.

You were so refreshing and unique but most of all

You were my favorite son…as you will recall.

The escapades were many – oh, the falls and bruises

Together – learning to drive and our many cruises!

Coming out as you did….and me right there with you.

You were my son for life, but to yourself you were true.

We both always walked to our own beating drums,
…but we did it together, and always were chums….

As we learned and we grew and we prayed and we drew

From strength from each other and we always knew.

That Life may mock us as we each made our choices

that God would be with us, as we blended our voices.

But from this rhythm of Life I now deviate

for my insecure uncertainty to alleviate.

How does a Step-Mom love a son

who is not much younger than she?

A past disco partner who was twirled and spun

now wants him in her life to be.

Your prior Mom's are gone as of now

And Step-Mom’s still here, at least from a distance.

She's always with you and will solemnly vow

and yearn for the old closeness, with insistence.

You are now a man and Step-Mom's in middle-age,
y
our strength continues to guide you along Life’s road.

Your troubles are in her prayers on middle-stage

her love is with you in her heart, just not showed.

As darkness falls and the wind rustles a chill,

the memories of years ago help keep her warm.

As you trudge through this life... any difficult hill
You are a survivor;  you will conquer any storm.

I love you, “Step-Mom”
